Beyond Academics: What a Holistic Approach to Learning Could Look Like

By  Katrina Schwartz From a child’s perspective, school, extracurricular activities and home are part of the continuous experience of life. From the perspective of teachers, coaches and parents, those experiences may seem more differentiated and are thus treated separately. However, if the adults in a child’s life approach his or her growth as a collaboration following a clear developmental path, every child will have a better chance at a life filled with choices and the skills to achieve goals, according to a report. “The idea is that if everybody starts to have a common understanding about what they’re trying to do and what an effective approach would be, and they understand that it’s a shared responsibility to help kids develop and learn over time, then hopefully it will lead to more discussion,” said Jenny Nagaoka, lead author of the Foundations for Young Adult Success: A Developmental Framework and deputy director of the University of Chicago Consortium on Chicago Schoo

5 Prayers I’m Praying for My Son

By  Matt Brown I still can’t believe I am a dad! My wife and I were overjoyed to welcome our son Caden into the world this past September. Honestly, no words could describe the feeling of love and joy that have overwhelmed us these past months with our first child. It is far, far beyond anything I could ever have imagined. The meaning of significance has significantly changed in my life now. All I want to do is be with him, and love him with everything I’ve got. His introduction into this world has gotten me thinking about what I want for him…and what I am praying for his life. Michelle and I are not the type of parents to plan out our child’s whole life, and we do not want to put a too much pressure on him to be a “world changer.” Sometimes I cringe when I hear parent’s being too spiritual with their kids and telling them they are going to “change the world.” We, rather, want our genuine faith rub off on him over time, building a deep legacy of faith and God’s car

FULL TEXT: Pope Francis' Homily, Mass at Luneta

The full text of Pope Francis' homily, as delivered during the Holy Mass at the Quirino Grandstand in Luneta, Manila, Sunday January 18 “A child is born to us, a son is given us” (Is 9:5). It is a special joy for me to celebrate Santo Niño Sunday with you. The image of the Holy Child Jesus accompanied the spread of the Gospel in this country from the beginning. Dressed in the robes of a king, crowned and holding the sceptre, the globe and the cross, he continues to remind us of the link between God’s Kingdom and the mystery of spiritual childhood. He tells us this in today’s Gospel: “Whoever does not accept the Kingdom of God like a child will not enter it” (Mk 10:15). The Santo Niño continues to proclaim to us that the light of God’s grace has shone upon a world dwelling in darkness, bringing the Good News of our freedom from slavery, and guiding us in the paths of peace, right and justice. The Santo Niño also reminds us of our call to spread the reign of Christ throughout t

7 Important Bible Verses for Kids to Learn and Memorize

Colossians 3:23-24 “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.” Some say that children don’t have a job but this isn’t really true.  For them, their household chores are a job and at school, their work is to do the best that they can.  They should understand that they are really working for the Lord and it is “the Lord Christ whom [they] serve.” Deuteronomy 11:18-21 “You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.  You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.  You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, that your days and the days of your children may be mul
